Visit The Hank Williams Boyhood Home And Museum

Hank Williams was one of the most prominent musicians to ever hail Alabama, and the impact he had on country music is undeniable. Before he ever performed at the Grand Ole Opry, Williams spent his childhood picking a secondhand guitar at his home in Georgiana. That old house is now a museum, and visitors are welcome to take a glimpse into the life of one of the country’s enduring legends.

The Hank Williams Boyhood Home and Museum

Hank Williams’ family moved to Georgiana in 1931, when he was seven years old. While he only lived in the small town for four years, this proved to be a formative time in the young boy’s life. It was in this community that Williams received his first instrument and learned to play guitar from a local blues musician, Rufus “Tee Tot” Payne.

When you arrive, you’ll cross the old wooden porch where he would practice strumming and singing during the hot summer months. Inside, you’ll see artifacts from his childhood as well as his career. The walls are covered in photographs, flyers, and newspaper clippings walking you through major moments in his path to fame. As you stand in their linoleum-floor kitchen, you can imagine the modest family dinners he enjoyed years before stardom. Standing at the old upright piano in the parlor, you can almost hear his voice as he began to write his own songs. Glass display cases contain old hats, suits, and guitars, each one with a rich story behind it.
